NB Power puts up fence at cliffs by Mactaquac dam
Utility official Philip Gilks says the fence will help prevent people from being hurt
NB Power has fenced off a popular area near the Mactaquac hydro dam where people go cliff jumping after learning of the risks being taken in the area.
The spot, which is located between the dam and the Riverside Resort, has been popular for a while, but now NB Power is taking action.
"We weren't aware of there being any huge risks until recently and when we became aware of that we really had to take some action," said Philip Gilks, project manager at NB Power.
Gilks said they had recently been told people were getting injured at the jumping spot.
The property is owned by NB Power, so utility officials felt a responsibility to put the fence up.
"You have to maintain your sidewalks and your access to your house, so we have to do the same thing," said Gilks.
They will also be putting signs up to warn people of the dangers at the cliffs.
But there has already been some opposition to the newly-erected fence. The gate has been wrecked, barbed wire at the top of the fence has been cut and a hole was made through the fence.
But the NB Power spokesperson says if the utility can keep maintaining it, eventually people will stay away.
"It's not going to happen immediately," said Gilks.
"People have tried to defeat fences and will continue to try to defeat them, but they do prevent people from getting injured."
