Power crews in New Brunswick's Kennebecasis Valley are looking for the cause of a major outage that affected more than 21,000 customers.

About 1,000 people were still without power in the Rothesay, N.B. region at 4 p.m. Sunday, according to NB Power.

More than 20,000 customers throughout Kennebecasis Valley were left without power at 7 a.m. this morning. The cause has not been identified, but by noon, power had been restored to about 16,000. By 4 p.m. all but 1,000 or so had power back on.

"Crews are able to sectionalize these customers and get them restored by switching them to a different substation," said NB Power spokeswoman Meghan Gerrish.

Helicopters are patrolling the transmission lines searching for the cause, she said.

The areas affected were in and around Rothesay all the way up to Long Point, Bloomfield and Salmon River.
