A missing 16-year-old boy from Lower Cape has been found safe, officials say.

Colby Steeves, who had been missing since Wednesday night, returned home on his own free will on Thursday afternoon, said Hillsborough Fire Chief Glen Northrup.

The chief said Colby just wanted to take a long fun ride.

An air and ground search for him had been underway.

Colby was reported missing by his parents at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, said RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah.

He was last seen leaving his home on his ATV on Wednesday at about 6 p.m., she said.

"His family is worried for him," Farrah had said.

The RCMP helicopter, Tri-County Ground Search and Rescue, the New Brunswick Off-Road Vehicle Enforcement Unit, the Department of Natural Resources and other volunteers were searching the all-terrain trail system near Colby's home, where he was last seen.
