Girl's family grateful for public's help

A missing 13-year-old girl from the Moncton area has been located safe in the Sussex area and a man has been arrested, according to the police.

The 13-year-old girl from Lower Coverdale was reported missing on Wednesday.

RCMP located the girl in a car on Highway 1 near Penobsquis Thursday about 1 p.m., Cpl. Christa Mitchell stated in a news release.

The RCMP helicopter assisted in the search.

A 24-year-old man, who was driving the vehicle, has been arrested for breaching a police undertaking, she said.

Charges are anticipated.

Mother says it's been 'surreal'

The girl's mother, who also can't be named, told CBC News it felt like it was happening to someone else. "It's been very surreal."

She said she remembers finding out her daughter was missing in the early morning hours of Wednesday and thinking it would be over soon.

"It was a moment of disbelief. We just couldn't believe that she was gone. And we thought that she would show up within a matter of a couple of hours," she said.

But the hours stretched on.

The mother says the man her daughter left with that morning had been living at their home for about 10 months at one point.

She said they had brought him into their family and church and treated him like a son.

"Initially, it was definitely a big brother relationship. And we think that boundaries got blended.

"When we tried to talk to him, and say, you know, 'Keep your distance from [her]. You're 24, she's 13. There's boundaries' and so forth…You know we thought that he would honour those requests of ours, but he didn't," she said.

RCMP say tips from the public helped in locating the girl.

The mother said the family is grateful for the public's help in getting her daughter home.

The investigation continues.

The RCMP had said they had reason to believe the girl might be with Adam Radcliffe, 24, of Shediac.

Radcliffe was on a police undertaking to have no contact with the girl.

Police had asked for the public's assistance and said Radcliffe might be driving a red, 2005 Suzuki Swift with New Brunswick licence plate number GNF 309.
