A young man is presumed to have died after a bridge jumping accident in New Brunswick Friday.

Oromocto RCMP spent Friday afternoon searching the St. John River for the body.

The man had been jumping off a bridge near Woolastook, near Fredericton.

"A 20-year-old male had jumped from the top of the bridge. It was a warm, sunny day and he was just jumping off to cool himself and he didn't come back up," said Cpl. Alain Desrosiers for Oromocto District RCMP.

Five search and rescue boats, as well as a number of local boats, were scouring the water .

Fredericton officials spoke out against bridge jumping in July, fearing the worst could happen.

The young man was from the area and at this point the RCMP say it is a recovery mission to find the man's body.

The decision whether to continue the search will be made Saturday morning.
