A farming co-op and makeshift market in Bathurst was destroyed by fire on Friday night.

The building on Munro Street attracted a large crowd as it burned.

Bathurst’s deputy fire chief Donald Laffoley said the south side of the building was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived around 9:30 p.m.

"Because of the type of structure, and the design and the age of it, the fire took hold of it pretty quickly and unfortunately it was a lost cause," he said.

The provincial fire marshal was on the scene on Saturday, but the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
