Fredericton Police have finally confirmed that the woman who was found dead in a basement apartment on Tuesday was murdered.

The female body was discovered in the Regent Street apartment of 26-year-old Bangladeshi student Shaila Akther Bari, who police say is missing. Bari was attending business administration classes at the University of New Brunswick, and worked part-time at a Fredericton drycleaning shop. She moved to the city in 1997.

Police found the body after Bari's friends reported her missing. An autopsy was conducted with help from a forensic specialist on Thursday, and despite being "quite certain" of the indentity of the victim, police will not release her name.

Major crime investigators are still combing Bari's apartment for clues, with help from officials with the provincial coroner's office.

Constable Peter Vail says at this point, there are no suspects. "Everybody we have been speaking to is a witness. Now, whether or not some of these people change from witnesses to suspects, these changes will evolve as the investigation evolves."

Police are asking anyone who had any direct or indirect contact with Bari since July 13 to call police headquarters at 506-460-2300.

Bari is described as having East Indian ethnicity, approximately 5'2" tall, 115 pounds with brown eyes and dyed reddish hair. She was also known to wear glasses.
