Crash, alleged abduction attempt may be linked

Police believe there's a link between a fatal car crash in Sussex and an abduction attempt in Saint John Monday evening.

Police believe there's a link between a fatal car crash in Sussex, N.B., and an alleged abduction attempt in Saint John Monday evening.

A 44-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted by her 45-year-old estranged boyfriend around 5:30 p.m. in the Champlain Heights neighbourhood of Saint John.

She managed to escape and was later released from hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Around 6:30 p.m., a male motorist died after collision between a pickup truck and a pulp truck on Route 10 in Roachville near Sussex.

The crash sparked a fire, badly burning the remains of the pick-up truck driver. The pulp truck driver was not seriously injured.

Saint John Police said the dead man is the same man they were seeking after the report of the attempted abduction.

"Through the investigation that took place last evening, and the time of the accident and the information … it sort of links the two of them together," said  Sgt. Pat Bonner.

An autopsy is being performed on the body and results are expected later Tuesday.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
