The Confederation Bridge has closed to all traffic until weather conditions improve.

The closure came into effect at 1:45 p.m.

The bridge has been closed for about 78 hours since the start of January, according to the toll and traffic supervisor.

Keith Sigsworth says the bridge has been closed more often this year compared to other winters.

He says most of the closures have been due to visibility, weather conditions or roads being blocked.

"This is a highly unusual winter. You got all your snow landed in the span of about six to seven weeks whereas normally you might get a storm or two and then two or three weeks so everything could settle down and the snow would shrink and you wouldn't have these conditions. But when you're going from anywhere from six to 14-foot cuttings you don't need the snow, you just need the wind to cause you a problem," he said.

Sigsworth adds when plows are pulled off the roads there's no sense to be open if there's no place for people to go once they're off the bridge.
