$500K Fredericton property requires cleanup

The site of a strip club bought by Fredericton is contaminated.

The city's council paid $500,000 for the North Star Sports Bar to prevent the Hells Angels from buying it. It was the city's only strip club.

Fredericton is destroying the building to allow for new development.

Wayne Knorr, a spokesman for the city, said Friday that contamination has been detected on the site. He described it as "minimal," but the nature and extent of it isn't yet known.

"It's not expected to cost a whole lot in regards to the total purchase price and as I said we are moving ahead with the legal documentation to finalize the arrangement," he said.

Knorr would not say if the city already owns the property, or if there is an option to get out of the deal if significant contamination is found.

He did not say how much the cleanup would cost.
