Statistics Canada says thousands of people in the Maritimes have already applied for about 2,500 census enumerator positions available in the region.

Guy Oddo, the agency's eastern region director, said enumerators will be doing what he calls "non-response followup" in the months after the 2011 census is mailed out in May.

The positions pay $15 to $18 an hour.

"It's an ideal job for either summer students or retirees or anyone that can give at least 20 hours a week," Oddo said. "It can be full time, but it can also be part time as a minimum of 20 hours a week."

Statistics Canada is looking for 1,200 field staff in Nova Scotia, 900 in New Brunswick and 200 in P.E.I.

Oddo says candidates should be computer-literate, have access to the internet via a home computer and be at least 18 years old.
