The owner of a classic Volkswagen Beetle is heartbroken after his car was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday morning.

Dieppe's Fire Division Chief Mark Cormier said they were called out to the Trans-Canada Highway at 1 a.m. on June 30 after the 1977 beetle caught fire.

"The guy was pretty upset, he'd bought it a couple of months ago," Cormier said.

"It was a convertible and he told us he could smell smoke and when he turned around he saw smoke and flames coming from the engine."

Cormier said a trucker stopped to try to help with a fire extinguisher but it was too late.

"Car fires tend to burn fast and even when we got there it was too late to save the bug," he said.

Traffic was impacted for a short period and there's no word on the cause of the fire.
