One person is dead after a crash on an untwinned portion of New Brunswick's Highway 7 Friday evening between a vehicle and a coach bus.

The crash happened at 5:20 p.m. near kilometre marker 43 near Petersville, about halfway between Saint John and Fredericton.

The Maritime Bus coach was heading north from Saint John heading to Fredericton with nine passengers on board. The vehicle was heading south when the crash happened. Both vehicles ended up blocking the northbound lanes.

Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP said it's unclear how the crash happened but did say that it was raining heavily at the time of the crash.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

The lone occupant of the vehicle died shortly after the collision. Three of the nine passengers and the driver of the Maritime Bus were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

RCMP said it was a busy evening with many crashes reported on New Brunswick roads.

An accident reconstructionist was on the scene investigating.
