NDP interim leader supports Muskrat Falls.

The interim leader of the federal New Democratic Party, Nycole Turmel, is standing behind Newfoundland and Labrador's Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project, she said during a visit to St. John's.

The project is one of the bigger political issues facing the interim NDP leader. Newfoundland and Labrador has a loan guarantee from the federal government for the project, and that guarantee has been called an unfair subsidy by the province of Quebec.

Turmel, a Quebec MP, said she is in favour of the loan.

"I support the request of Newfoundland on this issue," she said. "This is clear to me. We need a clean energy program. We want to make sure Stephen Harper with his promise follows through. It's not in the budget. At this point nothing is signed so we need to make sure this happen."

Turmel says her position on Muskrat falls doesn't stop Quebec from making a similar request for loan guarantees.
