Three missing ballot boxes have been recovered, Quebec City police said Sunday.

The mystery of the missing boxes arose after Elections Canada asked deputy returning officers to take ballot boxes home from advance polls earlier this month in the riding of Québec.

Amid media reports that some boxes had their seals damaged, the local returning officer ordered them brought back on Saturday. At that point, officials realized that  three were missing.

Following an appeal from elections officials, the boxes were returned voluntarily by a person who was responsible for them, police said.

Officials said it was too soon to say whether charges will be laid, or what condition the boxes are in. They are said to have contained hundreds of ballots.
