Two teenage girls were arrested and are expected to be charged after a cellphone video they took of them beating up a male peer made its way onto Facebook.

The video shows two girls pushing and hitting a boy in a parking lot of a Beloeil, Que., shopping mall while yelling at him. The girls alternated between filming and attacking the victim.

The girls were expected to appear in Saint-Hyacinthe youth court today, but the case was put off with the promise to reappear in May.

Sgt. Harry Wadup of the Richelieu-St-Laurent municipal police force said the girls are facing charges relating to issuing threats, assault and inciting violence.

He confirmed the authenticity of the video.

“It wasn’t a joke… This wasn’t set up,” Wadup said.

He said the three youths were friends at one point, but an argument between at least two of the three involved led to the events captured on video.

Wadup said the girls ambushed the boy after asking him to meet to hash out their problems.

The video, which was shared thousands of times on Facebook, has attracted a lot of attention.

“Unfortunately since this incident was put online, we’ve had two other official complaints that we are investigating of other people being offended by what they saw and they’ve made threats against the two girls,” Wadup said.
