Teacher accused of sex assault must stand trial
A former Rosemere high school gym teacher has lost her bid to have sexual assault charges against her thrown out because of delays and is now on trial.
Tanya Pontbriand is accused of assaulting a former 15-year-old student nine years ago.
She was in court this week asking for the charges to be dismissed because of legal delays in her case.
But on Friday, the judge ruled there was nothing unreasonable about the delays and ordered the trial to continue.
The victim, now in his mid-twenties, alleges that he had between 200 and 300 sexual encounters with Pontbriand between 2002 and 2004 while he was a student at Rosemere High School.
In his testimony Friday, he told the court he was surprised that Pontbriand, then his gym teacher, began to get intimate with him during a camping trip.
Pontbriand was 32 at the time.
Her trial is expected to last four days.
