Supporters rally for deported Basque man accused of car bombings

An alleged Basque terrorist was scheduled to be deported from Canada on Friday.

An alleged Basque militant was slated to be deported from Canada on Friday.

Ivan Apaolaza Sancho was scheduled to board a flight to Spain departing from Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport on Friday afternoon.

About 10 of Sancho's supporters demonstrated at the airport, and called on the Canadian government to ensure his safety when he arrives in Spain.

A Federal Court justice denied a last-minute request by Sancho's lawyer on Thursday for him to stay.

Sancho is wanted by Spanish authorities in connection with a series of car bombings linked to ETA, a Basque separatist group.

The 36-year-old has admitted to being part of the Basque nationalist movement but denies all ties to ETA.
