A fire near a seniors residence in the Laurentians has forced 32 elderly people from their home.

The fire started around 1 a.m. Saturday in a building adjacent the residence. The seniors were taken to a local community centre where the Red Cross provided them with support.

But the Sainte-Sophie fire department said the seniors residence suffered enough subsequent damage in the blaze that residents won't be able to return in the near future.

They've been offered accommodation in a hotel in Saint-Jerome.
