A motorist had been heading east near the Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil exit, east of Montreal, when the vehicle veered off the highway and slammed into an overpass support pillar.

The minister, also a medical doctor, came across the crash and stopped to help the victim.

But the driver had already suffered fatal injuries and Bolduc could only confirm the death.

The overpass, which was recently built, did not appear to sustain any significant damage.

Provincial police have not released any information on the driver and the cause of the crash is under investigation.
