New evidence that missing 8-year-old may be dead

The mother of eight-year-old Sébastien Métivier who disappeared in 1984 said Wednesday there is new evidence that he may have been murdered.

The mother of eight-year-old Sébastien Métivier who disappeared in 1984 said Wednesday there is new evidence that he may have been murdered.

Christiane Sirois said a woman, a perfect stranger, contacted her on Facebook claiming to know what happened to her son.

After an exchange of several messages, Sirois said, she arranged to meet the woman.

When they did meet, she said, the woman was distraught and hesitant, but finally told her that her boy was abducted, killed, dismembered and buried in a field.

Sirois said the woman told her the name of the killer, but refused to tell her where the field is where her son is buried. That's why, she said, she went directly to police after meeting the woman. She's waiting for police to see if they can verify the story.

Sirois says she'll doubt the truth of the story until she has seen proof.

"The duty of a parent is to hope," she said in French.

An advocate for missing children said she hopes the new information can finally bring the 27-year-old case to a close.

Pina  Arcamone, of the Missing Children's Network, said no assumptions can be made about the woman's credibility.  But either way, she said, Métivier's family faces a difficult period while police investigate the information.

"Our heart, I have to say, goes out to the family at this point, because the next few weeks are going to be quite demanding and quite emotional for this family. Will their worst fears now be confirmed?" she said.
