Mercier Bridge protest targets Montreal sewage dump
Around 40 demonstrators gather around banner reading 'Save Our River' as start of sewage dump looms
Around 40 people, some carrying a banner reading "Save Our River," gathered at the foot of the Montreal-area Mercier Bridge to protest the dumping of eight billion litres of untreated wastewater into the St. Lawrence River.
The City of Montreal is to begin the release of raw sewage around midnight after the controversial plan received the go-ahead from Environment Canada.
Protesters said they hoped to stop the dump if possible.
Another group was reported to have blocked Route 132, a highway connecting to the bridge, in the direction of the Mercier Bridge.
