McGill support staff strike
McGill students heading to their first day of class are being greeted by striking support staff, who walked off the job Thursday morning.
Support staff at McGill University walked off the job early Thursday morning, launching a general strike on the first day of class for many students.
The school and support staff are at odds over salaries and social benefits.
Moving ahead with a strike means students will be affected, but staff say have no choice, said Patrick Leblanc, a spokesman for the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
Striking staff members were on the picket line at 7 a.m. Thursday.
Several services will be disrupted, including on-campus residences and class laboratories.
