A man with a gun barricaded himself inside a home in Trois-Rivières on Saturday morning.

Police received a call around 3 a.m. reporting the man had barricaded himself in an apartment building.

The weapon allegedly in his possession is described as a long-range gun.

About 10 other residents from the building were rushed out by police officers attending to the scene.

Nearby businesses were also evacuated.

"When the police officers got there they saw a man with something that looked like a gun, so preventatively, they immediately closed the [road] just to make sure he doesn’t use his gun against anyone," said Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau of the Sûreté du Québec.

She said it does not appear as though there is anyone else inside the apartment with the man.

A one-kilometre security perimeter has been set up around the building. The northbound Thibeau Boulevard is closed near the corner of Des Prairies Street.

The Quebec provincial police are leading the investigation in collaboration with local Trois-Rivières police officers.

Specialists with the SQ, including a SWAT team, have been called to assist.
