A man is dead after a fire and explosion occurred late Tuesday afternoon at a gas station on Highway 117 in Piedmont.

Firefighter officials said the victim was likely the driver of a tanker truck, which was carrying heating oil.

The truck caught fire while it was parked at the gas station, and flames quickly to the building.

About 50 firefighters in the Laurentians responded to the call, which came just before 5 p.m. They spent several hours battling the flames.

A spokeswoman with the Sûreté du Québec said police could not access the site right away as firefighters had to secure the area first.

Highway 117 will be closed in the overnight hours in both directions between Chemin Sainte-Anne-des-Lacs road and Chemin de la Gare.

Drivers are being rerouted onto Autoroute 15.
