Eight people were forced from their Laval homes early Thursday after a fire broke out on the second floor of their building.

The call came in around 5:15 a.m. for the fire in the roughly 60-year-old building, said Jean-Sébastien Roch, an operations chief for the Laval fire department.

Once crews arrived at the building on des Prairies Boulevard, the flames had already overtaken the entire floor.

About 30 firefighters were called to help contain the fire. They stopped the flames from spreading, but the fire is not out yet, Roch said.

Damage from the fire itself is mostly limited to the second floor and the roof. The first floor may have water damage.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
