Nearly 12,000 Hydro customers in the City of Hampstead had their power cut due to a gas leak Monday morning.

Montreal firefighters say a construction crew doing work in the area hit a gas line on Thurlow Street just before 8 a.m.

According to Gaz Métro, the work site was covered in mud following the rain over the weekend. In trying to clear the mud, the crew hit the gas line.

The fire department requested power be cut in the area around 9 a.m., affecting thousands of residents.

Just before 11 a.m. the site of the leak was plugged. About 15 minutes later, firefighters at the scene determined there was no further trace of gas in the area. Power was restored around 11:20 a.m.

Gaz Métro estimates the line should be repaired by 3 p.m.

No one was injured.
