Major gas leak causes power outage, evacuations in Côte-St-Luc

Homes were evacuated and power was cut to an area in Côte-St-Luc after a gas pipe was broken during an excavation on Tuesday evening.

Parkhaven Avenue was closed between Kildare and Mackle roads for several hours as crews dug to stop the leak. Montreal's fire department set up a perimeter around the gas leak and evacuated buildings in the area.

Power to the area was cut off for more than three hours. It was restored to all customers by 11 p.m.

The size and depth of the gas leak made it especially challenging for crews, said fire operations chief Robby Lagacé. Gaz Métro specialists had to dig and reinforce a deep hole, he said
