Fire ravages Village building
'It was just a ball of fire'
A major fire that destroyed a condo building in the Village Thursday morning is now under control.
More than 60 firefighters were called in to battle the flames after the fire broke out just before 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Sainte-Rose and de Champlain streets.
"When the firefighters arrived, what they saw was a three-storey building in construction that was burning right through," said Montreal Fire Operations Chief, André Paquette.
"It was just a ball of fire."
Nearby buildings were evacuated before the structure collapsed. Some vehicles parked on the street were also damaged as was the roof of a neighbouring building.
There were seven condo units in the structure, which is under construction. The units were empty and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
