About 40 people were forced from their homes when fire broke out early Wednesday morning.

The fire started just before 3 a.m. in a three-storey condo building on Pierre-de Coubertin Avenue near Bennett Avenue, right across from the Olympic Stadium.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene.

A total of 18 apartments were evacuated, leading to roughly $500,000 in damage.

Residents won't be able to return home for a few weeks..

A spokesperson for the Montreal fire department says it appears the fire started on a rooftop terrasse.

He said there's extensive water damage to the building and people who live there will have to find another place to stay for now.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
