An 82-year-old woman is dead after her apartment caught fire in the Villeray neighbourhood late Tuesday night.

Montreal police said a security agent who was passing by the building at around 10 p.m. spotted smoke coming from the unit near the intersection of Clark Street and de Liège Street.

"He had to break down the door and he saw a woman . . . who was lying on the floor," said Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant.

"With the help of a citizen that was nearby the agent took the woman out of the building."

The agent started CPR and continued after paramedics arrived.

The woman was rushed to hospital, but died overnight.

Police and fire officials are still investigating.
