A man in his 70s is dead after he was hit by a car while walking along the sidewalk in Montreal's Villeray neighbourhood.
Police say the collision happened at 11:20 a.m., near the corner of L.-O.-David Street and Papineau Avenue.
The driver of the car, also a man in his 70s, was trying to park on the north side of L.-O.-David. According to police, he was backing up when he hit the wrong pedal. He accelerated instead of braking, striking the man on the sidewalk.
Police investigators are meeting with the driver to get more details about the incident.
The intersection where the fatal collision occurred is closed as the investigation continues.
