Quebec provincial police are investigating after shots were fired and an inmate was injured at the Donnacona Institution last night.

According to police, two inmates, one aged 30 and the other 41, were involved in a violent altercation at the maximum-security federal penitentiary for men, located southwest of Quebec City.

Fearing for the life of one of the inmates, guards first used a gas to try and break up the fight, said police spokeswoman Ann Mathieu.

When that didn't work, they fired at least one shot, she said.

One inmate was brought to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The other sustained minor injuries.
