The mother of an infant found dead in a garbage container at a small two-storey apartment building Friday morning is being questioned by Quebec provincial police.

Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Jean Tremblay said police were called to a residence in the town of Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croix at 4:10 a.m. ET.

Tremblay said the woman had been taken to hospital earlier with stomach cramps, and hospital staff had asked police to search the home for a newborn.

After scouring the area, police found the baby in a garbage container.

The woman who was taken to hospital lived with her boyfriend and his mother.

Tremblay said investigators are questioning all three.

"For the moment, all avenues are being considered, whether it was an accident or infanticide," Tremblay told reporters at the scene.

Investigators were still at the apartment Friday afternoon.

Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croix is on the south shore of Lac Saint-Jean, about 500 kilometres northeast of Montreal.
