Kareen Rivière identified as woman who died at Montreal marathon
34-year-old Maryland woman was 8 km into the marathon when she collapsed
The coroner's office is investigating the death of the 34-year-old woman who died during the Montreal marathon Sunday.
Kareen Rivière was walking the half marathon when she collapsed around the eight-kilometre mark near the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Urgences Santé spokesperson Stéphane Smith said Rivière was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived. They performed CPR on the scene and rushed her to the hospital.
The coroner's investigation will determine the probable causes of Rivière's death. The coroner's office will also make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
Rivière, a pharmacologist from Maryland, had created a foundation to help victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
The last time someone died in the Montreal marathon was in 2011, when a man in his 30s collapsed during the race. The coroner concluded that the death was accidental.
