Veteran Liberal MNA Jacques Chagnon has been elected as Quebec's new national assembly speaker.

Chagnon won a secret ballot vote at the provincial legislature Tuesday.

In his introductory speech, he told fellow MNAs he was moved by the honour bestowed on him.

Chagnon spoke about ongoing acrimony at the legislature, especially during Question Period, estimating it undermines the assembly's credibility.

"Our behaviour is contaminating the very important foundation of our democratic society," said the Liberal MNA, who represents the Montreal riding of Westmount.

Former national assembly speaker Yvon Vallières surprised many last week when he stepped down unexpectedly.
