Quebec City traffic ground to a near halt Wednesday after authorities shut down Honoré-Mercier Boulevard because of a broken water main.

Several lanes of the wide downtown artery were blocked while city workers repaired the burst pipe.

The breach is a major disruption for commuters, warned Quebec City spokesperson Jacques Perron.

"Traffic will be very slow, and we ask drivers, if possible, for them to leave the area," he said, adding the situation could have been worse.

"At this time of the year, we are in a low period, about 30,000 [people] drive here every day."

September is peak time for traffic, and as many as 60,000 vehicles use Honoré-Mercier daily, Perron said.

Authorities hope to complete repairs by Wednesday evening.
