Firefighters pulled an injured worker to safety after material collapsed at an Old Montreal worksite on Wednesday.

Quebec's Workplace Health and Safety Board is investigating the accident.

Board officials said the 55-year-old man had been working below ground level at an outdoor worksite at McGill College Avenue and Place d'Youville.

The ground below the man gave way, and he was buried in material up to his waist.

Firefighters dug out the man and pulled him to safety using a harness.

Urgences-Santé said the man sustained serious injuries to his legs.
