A man is scheduled to appear in court in Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., this afternoon to face sexual assault and kidnapping charges, after a woman who had been missing since Monday was found handcuffed following a routine traffic check.

The man, in his mid-20s, was originally scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning, but the appearance was pushed back.

Investigators believe the woman was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions at a rented cabin in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, said Richelieu–Saint-Laurent police Const. Yanic Parent.

Parent said the man was intercepted by chance late Tuesday morning in nearby Beloeil as police were making the traffic check.

An officer tried to pull the vehicle over after the suspect's licence plates were flagged by their system, Parent said.

When the driver didn't stop, police gave chase and the vehicle sped away. The driver lost control and crashed.

"The car just kept on going and had an accident just at the end of the Beloeil bridge," he said.

Inside the damaged vehicle, police found a woman they believe was being held against her will.

"Police officers say she still had handcuffs on one of her wrists," said Parent.

The woman had been reported missing from Montreal, he said.

She was taken to hospital after she was found.

Parent said she is being questioned to find out the circumstances of her disappearance. The woman and the suspect did not know each other, he added.

Parent said the man will also be charged with possession of an illegal weapon.
