ATM theft suspect gets stuck trying to flee

Montreal police said the suspect's car got stuck on a retaining wall while trying to flee the scene.

Suspect known to police

A 55-year-old man is in police custody after he allegedly tried to steal an ATM out of a bank in east end Montreal and got stuck while trying to flee.

The bank’s security company called Montreal police just after 12:30 a.m. to the location on Maurice-Duplessis Boulevard in Rivière-des-Prairies.

A surveillance camera caught a man trying to rip material off the walls surrounding the machine, said Const. Raphael Bergeron.

Officers arriving on the scene spotted a suspicious car leaving the bank.

Bergeron said the driver veered into a parking lot while trying to escape.

"The man tried to go onto the expressway of the Highway 25, but didn’t see that the parking lot was higher than road so he got stuck on a little wall," Bergeron said.

The suspect then abandoned the car and tried to run away on foot.

He was quickly arrested.

Bergeron said the man is known to police.
