30 detained and 1 arrested in student rally
About 30 people participating in a student protest Monday afternoon in downtown Montreal were detained by police.
The Montreal Police Service said it gave out tickets to demonstrators for blocking road traffic.
The rally was the latest of a series of protests held on the 22nd of every month since the Quebec student crisis touched off late last winter. The number of demonstrators has dwindled since the strike by college and university students largely ended in September
Monday's protest began at Place Émilie-Gamelin, next to the heart of the University of Quebec in Montreal. From there, demonstrators marched west on Ste-Catherine Street.
Officers intervened at about 4:15 p.m. as the rally was passing a police station on Ste-Elizabeth Street.
One person was arrested on a charge of violating release conditions.
