A woman was taken to hospital after a house fire in Winnipeg's River Heights neighbourhood.

Firefighters were called to the 700 block of Niagara Street just after 9 a.m. and found the woman on the second floor.

She was taken out and rushed to the Health Sciences Centre.

She is listed in stable condition.

Neighbours told CBC News that a family with four children lives in the house. The children had gone to school this morning and the father was at work at the time.

Firefighters rescued a dog from the home and passed it to a distraught man who had shown up in a FedEx delivery van.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen.
