Assiniboine Park Conservancy has an extra $2.25 million to help build a “heavy horse” centre at the zoo.

Ray McFeetors, the former CEO of Great West Life, donated $2 million to see the development of a horse centre at the zoo.

The McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre will go up on 4.7 acres at the north end of Assiniboine Park Zoo.

It will have a barn, pastures, paddocks, a carriage shed and walking paths.

Wagon and sleigh rides will be offered seasonally.

Great West Life itself has pledged an extra $250,000 for a paddock inside the centre.

The horse centre is part of the conservancy’s $200 million Imagine a Place campaign.
