Some students at Winnipeg's two universities are scrambling to find housing before a new academic year starts.

All 426 student-housing units at the University of Winnipeg are currently occupied, while the University of Manitoba's student residences are also at capacity.

The latter university even has a waiting list with about 300 names on it.

Complicating matters further for students is the fact that Manitoba has the lowest apartment vacancy rate in Canada.

As of April, the vacancy rate in the province was 1.2 per cent, which is up slightly from 0.7 per cent at the same time last year, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

The shortage of housing for students has hit some of them hard, as the CBC's Antonnette Smith found out. Click on the video player above to watch her report.
