Desiree Scott, Sophie Schmidt start Olympic soccer play

Two members of the Canadian women's soccer team playing their first match this afternoon at the Rio Olympics have links to Manitoba.

The match began at 1 p.m. CT and is being shown live online on the CBC Olympics website, on the CBC Rio 2016 app and on CBC TV.

Desiree Scott, 29, is a midfielder on the team and Rio marks her second Olympic Games. She played in the London 2012 Games where the Canadian team won a bronze. She was born and raised in Winnipeg and still lives in the city.

The other connection to the Prairie province is midfielder Sophie Schmidt, 28, who was born in Winnipeg but grew up in Abbotsford, B.C. She also played at the London Olympics.
