The CN main tracks in Winnipeg were closed for almost eight hours Sunday after a man was struck and killed by a train.

Winnipeg police said the man was hit just before 4 a.m. as he walked on the tracks at Waverley and Taylor.

Traffic in the area was not affected, but the main line was shut down.

Lindsay Fedchyshyn, a spokeswoman for CN, said the victim, 18, was hit by an eastbound CN freight train.

"This is a tragic reminder of the dangers of trespassing on railway property," she said.

Winnipeg police and CN police continue to investigate.
