A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder for the stabbing death of a man in downtown Winnipeg on Wednesday.

The teen is in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

Abdul Rahim Mah Jemei, 22, died from stab wounds after he was attacked on Vaughan Street, just off Portage Avenue, at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police.

A 19-year-old man who was with Jemei was also stabbed in the upper body but was treated and released from hospital.

Police spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aiken said the 16-year-old was picked up by police on Wednesday night.

He has had contact with police in the past but isn't known to have gang ties, she said, adding it doesn't appear he knew Jemei or the 19-year-old man.  Aiken said police are still looking for a possible second suspect.

Jemei's death is the city's eighth homicide of 2011.

This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the incident, who has not yet spoken with investigators, is asked to call police at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
