One person remains in a Winnipeg hospital on Sunday, after a fire broke out in a St. Vital apartment building.

Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Beliveau Road at around 8:45 a.m. CT.

Platoon chief Ted Kuryluk said the fire was mainly contained to one suite on the top floor of the three-storey building.

"There was smoke coming out of the window," Kuryluk said. "We had broken that window with the ladder and let all the trapped gases and heat out."

Ronit Jawa said he was sleeping in his apartment when the fire alarm went off. As he ran out of the building, he saw smoke coming out of a neighbour's window, he said.

"I was a bit worried [if] the people are safe … I was worried for them," Jawa said.

Fire officials told CBC News Sunday afternoon that one person remains in hospital in unstable condition, while three others were treated for smoke inhalation.

The building was evacuated, and several dozen tenants kept warm in a Winnipeg Transit bus for much of Sunday morning.

Total damage from the fire is estimated at $250,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
