THREE STARS | The sweet and sour times of working retail

For this reviewer, the sold out opening night of Sold Out (so far this sentence feels like a mirror that replicates into infinity) was like a visitation from the ghosts of Christmas past. Oh the sweet and sour times of working retail.
Populating the customers and staff of Handcrafted Kitchen Shit (awesome right?) are the talented Johanna Burdon and Christina Heather. Their character work was on point: specific and well realized. Particular shout-outs go to the relentlessly cheery manager, Pam; the swiftly disillusioned bachelor of philosophy cum retail clerk, Anna; and worst and best of all, the over-demanding and eternally dissatisfied Soccer Mom.
Framed by Anna's first and last day of work, what would have been an entertaining series of character sketches and movement pieces stretched into an overdrawn, hourlong show. Better to leave the audience wanting more — but keep an eye on these performers. They promise great things.
