'She was passionate about the game': Ringette tournament celebrates life of late player
St. James teams renamed Boom in honour of Keira (Boom-Boom) Bond
On the ice, Keira Bond was passionate, driven and an enthusiastic cheerleader for her ringette teammates.
Her personality — she was a firecracker on the ice, those who knew her say — earned her the nickname Boom-Boom.
Every time her team scored, Keira — who started playing at age five — would yell "Boom!"
Keira (Boom-Boom) Bond died of brain cancer at age 11 in June 2017, but her legacy lives on — and she's becoming a byword for ringette in St. James.
A new short film, called Boom, celebrates her life and impact on and off the ice. The five-minute film was produced by Andrew Wall and Kyle Bornais of Refuge 31 Films as part of CBC's Creator Network.
And the Boom is hitting the ice again, as teams across all age levels in the St. James Ringette Association are now known as the Boom.
The Boom this weekend will play in Keira's Winter Klassic, a tournament for U12 ringette players that Keira started after her diagnosis in 2016 to help fundraise for others with pediatric brain cancer.
The tournament runs Feb. 7 to 9.
Corrections
- We initially reported that Keira Bond's nickname came from the fact she yelled "Boom!" when her team scored. In fact, it came from the idea that she was a firecracker on the ice. We initially reported that the name of the tournament is Keira's Krusade. While there is a charity associated with the ringette player that uses that name, the tournament is called Keira's Winter Klassic.Feb 07, 2020 9:25 AM CT
